Adoption of public-good protocol to be led by Standards Australia

Food Agility welcomes the Australian Government’s continued investment in agricultural traceability and the growing national focus on trusted, interoperable supply chain systems.
Through the AgTrace Australia initiative, Food Agility has worked with industry, government and technology providers to develop and validate the Australian Agriculture Traceability Protocol (AATP) – a foundational framework designed to enable scalable, interoperable digital traceability for Australian producers.
Importantly, the AATP was deliberately developed as a public-good protocol, enabling industry-wide adoption rather than being tied to any single platform, provider or commercial interest.
Food Agility has consistently advocated that the long-term success of agricultural traceability depends on trusted, transparent and independent governance arrangements.
“We have been working very closely with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and other existing stakeholders to identify a pathway for the custodianship and governance stewardship of the AATP,” said Professor David Lamb, Food Agility Chief Scientist and Lead of the AgTrace Australia initiative.
“We look forward to working with Standards Australia in the national rollout of the AATP. The ad hoc grant it has received to achieve this ensures its long-term independence, integrity and national relevance.”
Through the AgTrace Australia initiative, Food Agility has demonstrated practical traceability applications across multiple agricultural supply chains, including beef, canola, and cherries.
The organisation is continuing to work with industry partners to translate standards, protocols and policy settings into tangible outcomes.
This is a significant opportunity for Australia’s agriculture industry to build a nationally coordinated traceability ecosystem that combines trusted governance, open and interoperable standards, practical implementation pathways, and industry-led innovation.
